We found this Portland Water Bureau utility cover beneath our feet while walking the city—an ordinary piece of municipal infrastructure with considerably more graphic ambition than strictly necessary.
The raised lettering and geometric details become a bold composition that feels almost like an old civic seal. PORTLAND OR WATER anchors the design, surrounded by strong concentric forms and two discreet roses for the Rose City.
Printed and framed, it turns something designed to disappear into the pavement into a piece of Portland worth stopping to look at.
Which, inconveniently, is exactly what we did.
