The Croton Aqueduct, completed in 1842, brought fresh water from Westchester County to Manhattan, transforming a city that had long struggled with contaminated wells, fires, and epidemics. More than a century later, reminders of that remarkable feat are still hiding in plain sight beneath your feet.
This design began as a cast-iron Croton Aqueduct Department utility cover we discovered on a Manhattan sidewalk. We gave it an imaginary coating of ink and pressed it into a bold block-print graphic, preserving the weathered lettering, the distinctive 1862 date, and more than a century of honest wear.
Printed on soft, lightweight ringspun cotton with a comfortable unisex fit, it’s for people who appreciate forgotten infrastructure, industrial typography, and the quiet satisfaction of discovering history in places almost everyone else walks right past.
