Hotel Benton Notebook
Some people keep notebooks for brilliant ideas, important appointments, or the beginnings of their great American novel. This one comes with a little Corvallis history and a questionable promise about fire safety.
The cover features artwork from a vintage Hotel Benton matchbook I discovered while digging through the past. Once one of downtown Corvallis’s grand hotels, the Benton welcomed travelers, hosted banquets, and provided a respectable place to spend the night. The building is still standing, though the hotel and its complimentary matchbooks are long gone.
I've preserved the original artwork just as I found it, complete with the wear and imperfections that come from surviving more than seven decades. And, of course, there's the hotel's wonderfully reassuring slogan:
ABSOLUTELY FIREPROOF
A bold claim for a hotel. An even bolder on a matchbook, like it’s a dare. As for whether the notebook is absolutely fireproof, I wouldn't test that particular feature.
