Hotel Benton Tote
Some souvenirs survive because they’re priceless. Others survive because someone shoved them into a kitchen drawer and forgot about them for 77 years.
This tote features artwork from a vintage Hotel Benton matchbook I discovered while digging through the past. Once one of downtown Corvallis’s grand hotels, the Benton welcomed travelers, hosted banquets, and watched the city grow up around it. The building is still there today, though these days you’ll have to supply your own matches.
The original artwork has been preserved just as I found it—slightly worn, a little imperfect, and all the better for it. Turn the bag around and you’ll find the matchbook’s wonderfully confident slogan:
ABSOLUTELY FIREPROOF
Which, for a book of matches, remains one of history’s more optimistic marketing decisions.
